You can only perform an action on a neighbor (attack, motivate/polish a building) once a day. If you fight with iron age units but you have not unlocked the iron age tournament then you will not score anything for the tournaments (you will still get ranking points though). If in another fight you use iron age units it will count for the iron age tournament. If in one fight you are using all bronze age units your battle points (assuming you win) will count for the bronze age tournament. The tournament you are fighting in is based on the age of the units you're fighting with (not the units you are fighting). Your battle points come from pvp (fighting other players), guild expeditions, the continent map and GvG. The top players based on battle points at the end of the tournament (usually sunday night) get prizes in medals. Each tournament board counts your battle points for a particular fight based on the units you use. You unlock access to each tournament on the continent map. Most people don't spend a lot of time on it, and so you might be surprised how little effort it takes to at least get some medals from PvP, even if you can't win the top position every week. If you don't want to build troops, or you are behind most of your neighborhood technologically (like, if most of the people in your neighborhood are in the late middle age and you are in the early middle age), then I would not advise you to do PvP, you'll probably lose most of the battles and it will just be discouraging. I would suggest you try it, but don't spend any significant time on it, and see how high you can place. You lose nothing by trying, and you may win some medals. I know a lot of people who participate int he tournament don't participate every single day and don't win against everyone in their neighborhood. Might have been 7 AM eastern time, but I am not sure. It was on one of the threads on this board fairly recently.
